Milan, March 16, 2022
Relationships are key
The Salvetti Foundation has promoted a meeting of members and friends about the ongoing international crises: not only the health pandemic, but also the Ukraine-Russia confrontation which adds serious risks to world peace. Unfortunately, global environmental sustainability seems to be decreasing in priority and concerns with professional and family responsibilities are also increasing.
Stefano Salvetti, at the beginning, recalled the myth of Prometheus and the distribution of justice and equity desired by the gods and poorly managed by humans. Remo Lucchi continued the meeting by pointing out that in the last decades of the 1900s the level of education in Italy has grown considerably. However, despite the fact that the young population was invested with political and cultural responsibilities, access to work remained precarious and real economic power remained in a few hands. The school system did not meet the needs of young people, but tried to aggregate them uncritically. Companies confirm profit as their goal, not social participation; they perform an aggressive paternalistic function and not a service one. The debate highlighted how the planetary problems of combating pollution have been addressed, but with little practical impact. In the business world, financial groups want quick profits, not sociological research. Even managers (who have largely replaced the entrepreneur-owners in the management of businesses) must respect quarterly profit targets, aim for short-term results, neglect far-sightedness. On the other hand, research and insights are increasingly important because they highlight the complexity of individuals behind habitual behaviors. With the arrival of the pandemic, the ideals about the future have diminished and instead immediate needs are affirmed.
The situation in Eastern Europe, briefly illustrated by Chiara Ejbich, widens the economic and social crisis, with migratory effects on the whole continent.
Technological innovation, especially in the field of new energy resources and quantum physics, may perhaps save the situation. We also need a better rationality of the ruling elites. However, a global approach is needed (for example: we cannot leave Africa on the periphery of civilization). Interpersonal relationships, based on knowledge and trust, will help manage common problems and provide mutual security.
The Salvetti Foundation website will be happy to host any further comments on the subject.

Dicembre 2021
Jesi (AN), 19 novembre 2021: Lo sviluppo sostenibile: ricerca, strategie, esperienze.
https://fast.mi.it/

December 2021
Scientific educational meetings for students in Italy
As announced, in addition to the activities connected with the 'Young scientists 2021' contest, organized by FAST and supported by the Salvetti Foundation, 4 meetings were held with the students (in the image the presentation posters), coordinated by Alberto Pieri, Secretary General of Fast and Member of the Salvetti Foundation.
Jesi (AN), November 19, 2021: Sustainable development: research, strategies, experiences.
Casale Monferrato (AL), November 24, 2021: Chemistry in support of sustainable growth.
Novara, Salone dell’Arengo del Broletto, 15 December 2021: Agriculture, environment, circular economy.
Mantua, 22 December 2021: Industry 4.0: knowing the opportunities to become protagonists.
(See the posters of the meetings in the 'Gallery' section of this site)
https://fast.mi.it/

Milano, marzo-aprile 2021
CONFERENZE - GIOVANI SCIENZIATI
In the last century the general theory of relativity and a variety of cosmological observations have introduced the notion of a beginning in time; but the age of the universe continued to be highly uncertain. Recent insights into the cosmic microwave background, the first light of the universe, and the large-scale distribution of galaxies allow us to determine the date of birth of our universe with surprising accuracy: 13.8 billion years ago, with less uncertainty. to one percent.
Third Conference, in streaming: Friday 9 April 2021, 2 pm
WHAT HOT THAT MAKES, AND MORE IN THE MOUNTAINS by Elisa Palazzi, ISAC-CNR Researcher, Turin.
The mountains are the sentinels of the climate; they are clear indicators of the changes taking place and their effects; are the natural thermometers that allow you to make an early diagnosis of the health of the planet. The Earth has a fever; warming was generally greater and faster at high altitudes than downstream. This is confirmed by the rapid melting of glaciers, the decrease in the extent, duration and depth of the snowpack, the changes in precipitation. It is also necessary to consider the changes in the animal and plant components of mountain ecosystems which, with warming, move towards higher altitudes. The plains are linked to the mountains in a profound and essential way, since they draw primary goods such as water (but it is not the only one).
Fourth Conference and Fifth Conference, in streaming: Monday 12 April 2021, 9:30 am
FROM THE CRISIS OF CIVIL AVIATION TO THE FUTURE OF MISSIONS IN SPACE by Fabrizio Bovi, Member of the MIUR Technical-Scientific Committee for the aeronautical institutes and Giovanni Caprara, President of the Union of Italian Scientific Journalists.
According to Fabrizio Bovi, the Coronavirus pandemic could drag the entire air transport chain into the abyss of an unprecedented crisis.

Salvetti Foundation Meeting
Milan, November 25th, 2019
Where do we go
The meeting with Francesco Giavazzi, Professor of Political Economy at the L. Bocconi University in Milan, brought together in the Sala del Casello of the Tertiary Management Training Center an audience of friends not only culturally interested, but also directly involved in the management of their own industrial business. Giavazzi began by emphasizing the extraordinary situation of the economy today: "Debt does not cost (almost) anything, that is, interest rates are now zero or very low". Central banks keep interest rates low to try to promote growth, despite the fact that States do not invest. Public and private investments are lacking both in Germany and in the United States and in Italy. There is a demographic reason: in Western countries, with a strong predominance of the ages between 30 and 50, people save on average 30% of their earnings. In China today there is no guaranteed social network, you have to pay for school, for health, there is no pension system, so Chinese workers save for their future, on average 50% of income. Although it would be time to do so, in Western countries public investment today is also held back by bureaucracy as well as by public budget considerations. Meanwhile the infrastructures are at risk; not only in Italy but also in the United States and Germany where many public works are now outdated and technologically outdated. Furthermore, Italy is burdened by many debts, but since the moment of austerity seems to have ended, investments should be made in the social sector; in particular, since globalization only rewards excellence and that the cause of inequalities is the lack of education, it is necessary to invest in school and in education. In this way we will be able to create products or services with higher added value towards other countries that are already very active.
But in Italy, for many years, productivity has not increased, even if someone does ... +10 and someone ... -10! Zero growth is the result of an average between realities that have grown and others that have worsened. Giavazzi lists three critical factors, due to which productivity does not grow: size, protection, property. For the dimension: while there is a part of the country that competes on the international market, made by medium and medium-large companies that have greatly increased productivity, in Italy we have too many small businesses (less than 10 employees), with low productivity. For protection: there are no laws on competition, productivity has no incentives, professions are qualified but corporate; Italy has advanced in the manufacturing sector, but little in the services sector. As for the property, unfortunately public companies are protected and many don't work (in 13,000 local public companies there are more administrators than employees); public subsidies (30 billion euros a year, of which 20 for the public and 10 for the private sector) guarantee companies, including private ones, and remove productivity stimuli; companies that no longer work, deceiving the workers, are delayed with aid. Giavazzi recalls having proposed to allocate these amounts to the reduction of the tax wedge, but the bureaucracy stopped the initiative. The politicians, in order not to lose votes, have shifted the decision-making power over the officials so the tenders are complicated, risky, and the officials protect the management of the investments with a slow bureaucracy.
Afterwards, even the brief debate with the participants at the meeting highlighted a very complex economic and financial landscape, in which unproductive costs and behaviors hold back economic development.

Meeting Fondazione Salvetti
Milano, 24 giugno 2019
Smart citizen e amministrazione pubblica
Technology is not an end, but a means to achieve a better quality of life, so Roberta Cocco has organized a Platform to accelerate development, research, and social issues, it is enough to have a Vision with the citizen at the center of public attention, and wanted to redesign the Services in a digital key. The speaker focuses on the following issues: the causes that led to the events; the consequences on the redefinition of the people's lifestyle project; the implications of this new project on the entire supply system (goods, products, services, communication, politics ...).
